“AI Intent Engine”: what it means and how to measure intent offline

Intent is not the same as a lead. An intent engine turns online and offline behaviors into a score that helps teams prioritize follow-up and measure what drives real outcomes.

Intent ≠ lead (the difference that changes your funnel)

A lead is an identifier (contact data). Intent is probability and timing: how likely someone is to take the next step, and how soon. You can have high intent without a lead, and you can have a lead with low intent. An intent engine exists to stop treating all leads the same.

  • Lead: who it is (contact).
  • Intent: what they want and how close they are.
  • Outcome: what action you should take next.

Offline intent signals (what you can actually measure)

In offline retail, intent shows up as behavior: time, depth, choices and CTA actions. If you can capture interaction events, you can build a score, just like on a website.

  • Time and depth: how long someone engages and how many screens/zones they explore.
  • Paths: which content sequence they follow (e.g., financing → trade‑in → CTA).
  • CTAs: test drive, financing, contact, service booking. These are high-intent actions.

How to use intent scoring inside CRM (two practical uses)

A score that doesn’t change behavior is useless. In CRM, intent scoring should change priorities and the follow-up playbook.

  • Prioritization: who gets called first and what SLA applies.
  • Playbooks: different scripts and sequences for different intent tiers.
  • Learning: which signals predict appointments and sales over time.

What it looks like in the showroom (offline)

The showroom becomes measurable when you define a funnel: engaged → CTA → lead → appointment → outcome. With that, you can improve the “middle steps” that are invisible in most dealer reporting today.

A simple model to start (without heavy ML)

Start with a weighted rule-based model. It’s transparent, easy to tune, and enough to create operational impact.

  • List 10–15 events and assign weights.
  • Set thresholds for hot/warm/cold.
  • Add an escalation override (e.g., “ask for human”).
  • Review weekly and adjust with real outcomes.

Research nugget: why end-to-end workflows beat point experiments

Industry narratives (e.g., BCG and others) often emphasize that the biggest value from AI comes from end‑to‑end workflows in marketing and sales, not isolated experiments. Intent engines are powerful because they connect measurement to action.

FAQ

Common questions about intent engines and scoring.

  • Is intent scoring only for online? No. Offline behaviors can be measured and scored too.
  • Do we need to identify the person? Not always; anonymous intent can still optimize UX and messaging.
  • Will this replace salespeople? No. This makes sales effort more focused and timely.
